Planetary positions come from the Swiss Ephemeris on NASA JPL DE431 data, accurate to a fraction of an arcsecond, using the sidereal zodiac with Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa. We checked Steer's panchang against 1,124 consecutive days of the Government of India's Rashtriya Panchang: 100% agreement on tithi, nakshatra, yoga, and karana names, with timing differences under a minute. Does Steer use Vedic or Western astrology?
Vedic. Steer uses the sidereal zodiac measured against the fixed stars, with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the convention used across Jyotish and by Indian almanacs. Western apps mostly use the tropical zodiac, which currently differs by roughly 24 degrees, so your sign can differ between the two systems. Sidereal vs tropical, explained.
